3 Points to Remember While Organizing Your Resume

Designing your resume is as important as the content itself. Choosing the right format helps you to highlight those points which you want your employer to notice. A well written resume ensures that you progress faster through the recruitment procedure.

Experience or Education

This is a dilemma faced by many candidates; what should be mentioned first? Work experience or educational details? If you are a fresher or have less than 5 years of work experience, the importance should be given to educational qualifications; otherwise work experience should be mentioned first.

It is important to list out all your educational details with your GPA if you have less than 5 years of working experience. Once you cross the 5 year experience level it is enough if you mention the basic graduation and any additional certifications you attained after the graduation.

While describing the experience, information should be provided about the designation, employment duration and nature of the work in all the previous companies you have worked. You can also mention the assignments you have done using similar skills as required by the potential employer.

Specific achievements with references will make your resume stronger than the rest. All information should be mentioned in the reverse chronological order.

Objective

Everyone knows that your objective is to get the job you wanted. However, you have to say much more than that to get noticed. You should have your long term objectives very clear and focused and describe how each initiative you are taking now carries you towards the long term goal in a systematic way.

Make sure your objectives are achievable, practical and not too fancy. It should give the message to the employer that joining his organization is a step in achieving your career objective.

Displaying the Skills

The potential employer would like to know not only your skills but also how you have used them for your existing or previous company. Simply listing the skills will not serve the purpose. It should be supplemented with specific instances or projects where you have used that skill to bring benefit to the company.

Ideally there should be two parts, one with a list of skills and the other with the assignments completed. The list is used for comparing with the requirements of the job and the assignments illustrate the practical applications.
